Monchhichi has been delighting toy lovers since 1974, making it one of the longest-running and most beloved Japanese character brands in the world. But how did it all begin, and why are collectors falling in love with Monchhichi all over again? Here's the story, plus what to collect today.
The Origins of Monchhichi
Monchhichi was created by the Japanese toy company Sekiguchi and launched in Japan in 1974. The original was a plush toy: a small, thumb-sucking, monkey-like creature with a cherubic face, a soft body and a moulded vinyl face, hands and feet.
The name is often said to combine the French word "mon" (my) with "chichi," a Japanese sound associated with a baby sucking its thumb. That thumb-sucking pose is still central to the character's charm today.
The Global Phenomenon
Around 1980, Monchhichi was launched in the United States through a deal with Mattel and spread across Europe, quickly becoming a sensation. An animated TV series followed in the US in 1983, cementing Monchhichi as a genuine pop culture icon of the era. Millions of kids grew up with a Monchhichi as their favourite companion.
The Revival
Monchhichi never disappeared in Japan, where Sekiguchi kept making the toys through the decades. Globally, though, the brand has had a major revival as nostalgia for 80s toys collided with the growing kawaii collector scene.
Today Monchhichi releases new designs regularly, from seasonal plush to fashion-forward keychains and pop culture collaborations like our Monchhichi x Stranger Things keychains. They appeal to both nostalgic adults and a whole new generation of kawaii fans.
