Chiikawa has taken the kawaii world by storm, but if you're new to the series, the cast can be a little confusing at first. Who is who? What are their personalities? And why does everyone love them so much? Here's your guide to the Chiikawa characters.
What is Chiikawa?
Chiikawa (ちいかわ) is a Japanese manga and character series by the artist Nagano, who first shared the comics on Twitter (now X). The name is short for the Japanese phrase "chiisakute kawaii," meaning "small and cute." The series became a phenomenon in Japan, got its own anime, and quickly spread around the world.
The characters live in a world where they take on odd jobs like weeding and hunting to earn a living. Life isn't always easy for them, but they find joy in good food, friendship and small wins. That mix of cute and surprisingly emotional is what makes fans so devoted.
The Main Trio
Chiikawa
The main character and namesake of the series. Chiikawa is a small, round, white creature with a gentle, timid personality. Chiikawa is easily overwhelmed and cries often, but always tries their best, including studying hard for the weeding certification exam. Think of Chiikawa as the heart of the series.
Hachiware
Chiikawa's best friend, and a cat. Hachiware is white with blue markings split down the middle of the face. That's where the name comes from: hachiware is the Japanese term for that split coat pattern. Hachiware is cheerful, kind and optimistic, loves singing, and is often the one who reassures Chiikawa that things will work out.
Usagi
The third member of the trio. Usagi is a yellow rabbit with boundless, chaotic energy who mostly communicates in loud exclamations like "Ura!" and "Yaha!" Usagi is completely unpredictable, but also surprisingly capable, and often the one who charges in first. Many fans say Usagi is their favourite.
Other Fan-Favourite Characters
- Momonga: a flying squirrel who craves attention and wants everyone to say how cute they are. Cheeky, spoiled and very good at causing trouble.
- Kurimanju: named after a Japanese chestnut bun, Kurimanju is laid-back and loves good food and a relaxing drink.
- Rakko: a sea otter and a top-ranked hunter. Strong, calm and admired by Chiikawa and friends.
- Shisa: a hardworking shisa (an Okinawan guardian lion-dog) who works at the bakery. Fans of the bakery storyline will love our Bakery Staff Mascot Keychain.
Why is Chiikawa so Popular?
Chiikawa captures something very real about modern life. The characters are small and vulnerable in a world that can be overwhelming, but they keep going and find happiness in simple things. The combination of cute visuals and genuine emotional depth sets Chiikawa apart from other character series, and it's why the merchandise sells out so fast in Japan.
